It’s a well known fact that Samphire loves a collaboration. And so, The Samphire Club, NotWorking Networking and Like Minds have joined forces to present a series of evening events at Exeter’s Hotel du Vin. The events will feature local business leaders talking about their entrepreneurial journey, with a Q&A and the opportunity for some networking both before (enjoy a welcome drink and canapés from 6pm) and after the main event.

The first guest, rather aptly, is Andrew ‘Drew’ Ellis of Like Minds, in conversation with NotWorking Networking`s Chris Bentley and, if his outline bio (below) is anything to go by, you`re promised a fascinating evening hearing about what it`s like to create iconic designs and work at the forefront of technology.

About Drew Ellis:

Without giving too much away…Drew’s career started while he was still at art college in London. Interviewing the partners of seminal record sleeve design team, Hipgnosis for his second-year thesis led to them offering him the position of design and photography assistant – a position he held during the remainder of his time at college. His time with Hipgnosis is featured in the Netflix documentary about the studio, Squaring the Circle, and included designing record sleeves for 10cc, David Gilmour, Rainbow and The Alan Parsons Project, as well as being tour photographer for Pink Floyd’s final Earls Court shows.

After graduating he freelanced, which included designing sleeves at Polydor and Stiff Records, working with U2 at Island Records and undertaking tour photographer duties for Madness’s 1980 tour. In 1983 he founded his own design agency, Icon and went on to work with leading musicians, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir George Martin, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and The Alan Parsons Project (earning a nomination for a Grammy for best sleeve design) as well as DuranDuran, Nik Kershaw, ABBA, Diana Ross, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Phil Collins and many more. This was also the period when he created the iconic “Choose Life” series of slogan T-shirts for Katharine Hamnett.

After opening a second design studio, Icon America in Los Angeles in 1988, he sold the company the following year to a UK printing group PLC. Upon leaving the PLC, his next venture saw him turn to the nascent internet, founding one of the world’s first digital agencies, Eyetoeye in 1994.

In 2009, during the first rush of social media platform launches, Drew co-founded Like Minds. Based in Exeter, Like Minds has run over 100 events worldwide featuring entrepreneurs and business leaders in places as far apart as London, New York and Helsinki. More recently, in 2021, Drew co-founded DENA Partners, a project finance company helping large-scale property developers and international businesses receive project funding.

Samphire Club members can book on to the event here; guests and friends of the Club should email John (john@thesamphireclub.com) or book on the Like Minds website.
